- A Participation Discount for drivers who sign up for Snapshot at new business replaces the 30-day discount and is guaranteed for the entire first term as long as the customer plugs in the device within 45 days.
- A small number of customers with riskier driving habits get a rate increase at renewal.
- More participants earn discounts, and more that twice as many drivers earn double-digit discounts.
- If customers change their mind and want to opt out after plugging in the device, they have 45 days from the enrollment date to do so without a penalty.
- Does anything change for customers currently enrolled in a prior version of Snapshot?
No, if you have a customer who participated in Snapshot prior to the new product going live, nothing will change for them.
How does a customer get a discount?
A new business customer receives a participation discount when they sign up for Snapshot. Once the customer plugs in the device and begins driving, they are guaranteed this discount for their entire first term, and they can follow their driving data online. At renewal they’ll see their Snapshot results. Safer drivers will keep the participation discount at renewal, and may save even more. The customer unplugs the device and returns it to Progressive.
Is there a fee for enrolling in Snapshot?
There is no fee to enroll in Snapshot. However, the device needs to be returned. If a customer does not return the Snapshot device after finishing the driving period, we’ll send them multiple reminders. If the device is still outstanding we’ll charge a $50 fee to replace the device.
When will my customers learn about their Snapshot results?
They can log in to their policy at any time to see how they’re doing. We’ll send them an e-mail reminder to check out the reports. When it’s time to return the device, the update will show exactly how their rate will change at renewal.

Can a customer add Snapshot in the middle of a policy?
Yes, customers can enroll themselves at ProgressiveAgent.com at any time. Please note the initial Participation Discount is only available at new business. For customers who endorse Snapshot after purchase, the results will be applied at the first renewal after completing the Snapshot driving period. We encourage you to use Snapshot primarily for new business and only endorse existing customers who may request it.
Opting out of Snapshot
Can a customer opt out of Snapshot?
Snapshot is a voluntary program, and a customer can opt out at any time by sending the device back to Progressive. However, the customer will lose their Participation Discount and any chance to earn additional savings at renewal.
If the customer opt outs within 45 days of enrolling in Snapshot, their policy will go back to the standard Progressive rate, and their Snapshot results will not impact their renewal.
If the customer plugs in the device and then opts out after 45 days of being enrolled in Snapshot, we’ll add a late opt out penalty to the policy at renewal.
All customers opting out of Snapshot must return the device to Progressive.
How does a customer opt out?
They can simply return the device, contact their agent Call Streamless Insurance at 972 820 7000
or call Progressive anytime directly at 877-329-RATE.
Why do you surcharge a customer who plugs in the device and then opts out after 45 days?
Based on fairness, Snapshot– safer drivers pay less, while riskier drivers pay a little more. We can’t reward participants who have safer driving habits with the savings they deserve if drivers can opt out of the program after demonstrating over 45 days that they have riskier driving habits. We believe 45 days is a generous window for customer who don’t feel Snapshot is a good fit to opt out without penalty, but extending this window beyond 45 days would impact our ability to fully reward safer drivers.
Snapshot reporting
Can customers get feedback their driving behavior?
Yes, that’s the best part. While the Snapshot device is plugged in, customers can access their driving data on ProgressiveAgent.com for an update on how their driving behavior is affecting their results.
Once they log in with their user name and password, they select the appropriate policy, then click “Discounts and Programs” at the top of the page. Once there, they can click on “Snapshot” in the list of available programs.
Auto compatibility and plugging in
How do my customers get the Snapshot device?
Progressive mails the device to the customer along with a quick start guide on how to plug in the device.
When should they plug it in?
Your customers should plug the device in as soon as they receive it. Snapshot will not work until the device is plugged in.
How do they plug in the device?
The device plugs into the car’s on-board diagnostic port (OBD port) typically found under the steering wheel. It’s easy to do and only takes seconds.
An easy quick start guide comes with the device. They can also find vehicle-specific instructions at progressive.com/plugin.
How do I know if the device is compatible with a customer’s car?
The device is compatible with most cars model year 1996 or newer.
What if my customer doesn’t plug in the device?
If they don’t plug in the device after 45 days, he or she will need to mail it back to Progressive in the postage-paid box in which it arrived. Remind them to save the box.
What happens if the device is unplugged?
To ensure the best Snapshot experience, the device needs to stay plugged in during the Snapshot driving period. If a mechanic or emissions technician temporarily removes it to run a diagnostic check, your customers should plug it back in immediately upon completion. If the device is accidentally unplugged, Progressive will notice the device communications have stopped, and we’ll send your customer an email asking them to check the device.
Data collection and GPS
What information does the Snapshot device collect?
The Snapshot device collects information about sudden changes in speed, how much a customer drives, and when they drive. It also collects their vehicle identification number and triggers an email to the customer if the device is unplugged.
Do Snapshot devices have GPS?
No Progressive Agency customers have devices with GPS. Some of Progressive Direct customers have Snapshot devices with a GPS transmitter. Even in those instances, we currently collect location data only for research purposes—we don’t use it to calculate a customer’s rate.
When should my customer return the device?
We’ll send an email when it's time to unplug and return the device. We usually want devices plugged in for at least 75 days.
We usually try to time that email with the first policy renewal after the driving period is complete. Bottom line: just look for that email. Progressive will also send the customer a postage paid envelope to make the return easy.
What if my customer needs more information?
Have your customer call Progressive at 877-329-RATE any time.
